Dog Leg Fracture: Immediate First Aid and Veterinary Care

A suspected leg fracture in a dog requires urgent veterinary attention. Do not attempt to set or splint the bone yourself.

Immediate Steps

1. Restrain calmly: Muzzle if painful (even gentle dogs bite when hurt).
2. Immobilize: Gently support the limb; avoid manipulation. Use a towel/sling for transport.
3. Control bleeding: Direct pressure with clean gauze if open fracture.
4. Cold compress: Ice pack (wrapped) 10–15 min to reduce swelling.
5. Transport: Rigid surface (board, crate) to minimize movement.

Veterinary Treatment

• Radiographs → fracture classification.
• Stabilization: external coaptation (splint/cast) or internal fixation (plates, pins, external fixator).
• Pain management: NSAIDs, opioids, gabapentin.
• Antibiotics if open fracture.
• Strict rest (crate confinement) 4–8+ weeks.
• Recheck radiographs; gradual rehab.

Infection Watch

Monitor for increased swelling, redness, heat, discharge, fever, lethargy, anorexia. Contact vet immediately if seen.
