Glycosuria Without Hyperglycemia: Causes & What It Means
1. Kidney disease:
- When the kidneys are damaged, they may not be able to properly filter glucose from the blood, leading toglycosuria(glucose in the urine) without hyperglycemia(high blood sugar).
2. Medications:
- Certain medications, such as diuretics (used to increase urine output) and corticosteroids, can cause glycosuria without hyperglycemia.
3. Stress:
- Severe stress can lead to the release of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can cause the kidneys to excrete more glucose into the urine.
4. Pregnancy:
- During pregnancy, the increased levels of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone can affect glucose metabolism and lead to glycosuria without hyperglycemia.
5. Low carbohydrate intake:
- Consuming a very low carbohydrate diet can reduce the body's glucose supply, leading to increased glucose reabsorption in the kidneys and decreased glucose excretion in the urine.
