Serrapeptase Dosage: Converting International Units (IU) to Milligrams

Serrapeptase in an enzyme originally found in the intestines of silkworms. It is used in holistic medicine to treat blood clots, arterial plaque and other circulatory problems. The active ingredient in serrapeptase is measured in international units (IU), which represent an agreed upon amount of a biological unit (serrapeptase in this case) that will produce a certain affect. The concentration of serrapeptase can differ from supplier to supplier, so when you are measuring doses by the milligram you must take the concentration into account.

  Read the product information to find out the standard of conversion used by the manufacturer or supplier. The conversion standard may vary from one supplier to another. For example, one company may use a standard of 20,000 IU per milligram, while another may use a standard of 2,000 IU per milligram.

  Divide the number of serrapeptase international units by the number of international units per milligram for that particular supplier. The result will be the number of milligrams. For example, if you have 10,000 IU of serrapeptase and that particular brand of serrapeptase contains 2,000 IU per milligram, divide 10,000 by 2,000 to get a result of 5 mg.
