Fish oil is used to lower triglycerides, prevent heart disease, lower high blood pressure, and ease rheumatoid arthritis, ADHD and kidney problems, among other things.
Drawbacks

Fish oil, according to WebMD, can be unsafe when consumed above 3 g per day, leading to immune system problems and possibly increasing cholesterol levels. Side effects at any dosage can include bad breath, heartburn, nausea and loose stools.

Patients who use an implanted defibrillator should avoid taking fish oil supplements. WebMD also recommends that people with a condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis avoid the supplements due to the increased risk of cancer. Those with bipolar disorder and depression should consume fish oil with care.
Interactions

Fish oil can interact with other medications, such as certain birth control pills, medications for high blood pressure and orlistat. Care should be used when taking blood clotting medications as well. Before consuming fish oil with other medications, consult a pharmacist to avoid serious reactions.
