How to Make a Tincture With Fenugreek Seed
Fenugreek seeds are used for cooking and medicinal purposes. For the latter, fenugreek has been attributed to helping new mothers increase breast milk production; it can also reduce fevers, stimulate the male libido and treat bronchitis. When preparing the tincture, use an economical brand of vodka instead of a top-shelf vodka, because the alcohol's flavor isn't important to the recipe. A typical dosage for tinctures is 1 tsp. up to three times per day, and it can be mixed with water or tea.Things You'll Need
- Mortar
- Pestle
- 2 canning jars, 32 oz. each
- 8 oz. 100-proof vodka
- 2 canning jar lids
- Hand-held strainer
- Cheesecloth
Instructions
Preparing the Fenugreek Seed Tincture
Crush 7 to 11 oz. fenugreek seeds with a mortar and pestle. Use 7 oz. seeds if you want a weaker tincture or 11 oz. if you want a stronger tincture.
Pour the crushed fenugreek seed into a 32-oz. canning jar.
Pour 8 oz. 100-proof vodka over the seeds.
Seal the canning jar with a lid.
Store the jar in a dry, dark place, such as a kitchen cabinet or a pantry closet.
Agitating the Tincture
Shake the jar vigorously the next day to agitate its ingredients.
Return the jar to its storage place.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 every day for the next 27 days.
Straining the Tincture
Position a hand-held strainer above an empty 32-oz. canning jar.
Pour the tincture through the strainer to collect the crushed fenugreek seeds.
Scrape the seeds from the strainer with a spoon onto a piece of cheesecloth that's been folded in half twice.
Squeeze the cheesecloth tightly over the jar to drain the excess alcohol from the crushed seeds.
Screw the lid onto the jar, and store it in the location where you left the tincture to marinate.
