"Amb Resident QID": Medical Order for Ambulation Frequency

Decoding the Order

"Amb resident qid" = Ambulate resident four times daily.

• Amb / Ambul: Ambulate (walk/mobilize)
• Resident: The patient (in long-term care / nursing home context)
• QID: Quater in die = four times a day (typically ~every 6 hours: e.g., 0600, 1200, 1800, 2200)

Clinical Purpose

• Prevent deconditioning, DVT, pneumonia, constipation, pressure injuries.
• Maintain mobility, strength, orientation.
• Part of restorative nursing / rehab plan.

Nursing Implementation

• Assist per care plan (standby, contact guard, walker, gait belt).
• Document: time, distance, tolerance, assist level, refusal reason.
• Report decline in endurance or new instability.

QID ≠ QD (daily) or QOD (every other day). QID = 4x/day.
