MBBS After BHMS in China: Medical Education Pathways and Admission Requirements

You cannot directly enter an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) program in China after completing a BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) degree.

Why Not?

• Both MBBS and BHMS are undergraduate medical degrees. Chinese medical universities require applicants for MBBS to hold a senior high school diploma (or equivalent) with a strong background in science subjects (biology, chemistry, physics).
• BHMS is not considered equivalent to the prerequisite secondary education for MBBS admission in China.
• MBBS programs in China are typically 5–6 years long and taught in English or Chinese; they do not offer advanced standing for alternative medicine degrees.

Alternative Pathways After BHMS

If you wish to pursue further medical education in China, consider:

• Master's Degrees in related fields (public health, pharmacology, medical research, integrative medicine)
• Diploma or Certificate Programs in specialized areas
• Research Positions or non-clinical roles in medical institutions

For clinical practice as a physician in China, you would need to complete a recognized MBBS program from the start and pass the Chinese medical licensing examination. Always verify current admission requirements directly with target universities and the Chinese Ministry of Education.
