Understanding the 3 Stages of Breathing: Inspiration, Gas Exchange & Expiration
The three parts of the breathing process are:
1. Inspiration is the process of taking air into the lungs. It involves the contraction of the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles, which expand the chest cavity and draw air into the lungs through the nose or mouth.
2. Gas exchange is the process by which oxygen from the air is exchanged for carbon dioxide from the blood in the lungs. This process takes place in the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs in the lungs.
3. Expiration is the process of expelling air from the lungs. It involves the relaxation of the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles, which causes the chest cavity to contract and expel air from the lungs through the nose or mouth.
