Unconscious but Breathing: Immediate Steps & Emergency Care
1. Check the scene for safety.
* Are there any immediate threats to your safety or the victim's?
* If so, call 911 and remove the person from the scene if it is safe to do so.
2. Check for responsiveness.
* Gently shake the victim and shout, "Are you okay?"
* If the person does not respond, they are unconscious.
3. Call 911.
* Even if the person seems to be breathing, it's important to get medical help right away.
* The dispatcher will give you instructions on how to perform CPR if the person stops breathing.
4. Start CPR if the person is not breathing or is not breathing normally.
* Begin CPR by giving 30 chest compressions.
* Follow this by giving 2 rescue breaths.
* Continue CPR until the person starts breathing, help arrives, or you are too exhausted to continue.
* If a person is not breathing and you are not trained in CPR, you should give hands-only CPR until help arrives.
5. Stay with the person until help arrives.
* Talk to the person in a calm voice and try to keep them calm.
* Be reassuring and let them know that help is on the way.
