Mycobacteria Avium Complex (MAC): Risk Factors & Who's Vulnerable
People who have weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or transplant recipients, are more likely to get infections from MAC. Others at risk include:
* People with chronic lung disease, such as COPD or cystic fibrosis
* Smokers
* People who are underweight
* People who have diabetes
* People who are taking certain medications, such as corticosteroids or chemotherapy
* Elderly people
MAC can also be spread through unpasteurized milk or other dairy products.
