Types of Pollution: 8 Categories with Sources & Impacts

Pollution is the introduction of harmful contaminants into the natural environment. Eight major categories:

1. Air Pollution

  • Sources: Combustion (vehicles, industry, power plants, biomass), dust, VOCs, ammonia (agriculture), indoor (cooking, heating, radon).
  • Key pollutants: PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, O₃, NO₂, SO₂, CO, lead, benzene, PAHs.
  • Impacts: Respiratory/CV disease, stroke, lung cancer, cognitive decline, 7M premature deaths/yr (WHO).

2. Water Pollution

  • Sources: Industrial effluent, agricultural runoff (N, P, pesticides), sewage, oil spills, mining (acid mine drainage), plastic, pharmaceuticals.
  • Impacts: Waterborne disease, eutrophication, dead zones, bioaccumulation (Hg, PCBs), coral reef collapse.

3. Land / Soil Pollution

  • Sources: Industrial waste, landfills, mining, agrochemicals, improper e-waste, nuclear contamination.
  • Impacts: Soil degradation, food chain contamination, groundwater leaching, habitat loss.

4. Noise Pollution

  • Sources: Transport (road, rail, air), industry, construction, recreational.
  • Impacts: Hearing loss, CV disease (chronic stress), sleep disturbance, cognitive impairment in children, wildlife disruption.

5. Light Pollution

  • Sources: Excessive/misirected artificial lighting (streetlights, buildings, advertising, skyglow).
  • Impacts: Circadian disruption (melatonin suppression), sleep disorders, metabolic disease, breast cancer risk, ecological havoc (migration, predation, plant cycles).

6. Thermal Pollution

  • Sources: Power plant/industrial cooling water discharge, deforestation (↑ solar absorption), urban heat island.
  • Impacts: ↓ dissolved O₂ → fish kills, metabolic rate disruption, thermal shock, algal blooms.

7. Radioactive Pollution

  • Sources: Nuclear accidents (Chernobyl, Fukushima), weapons testing, mining/milling, medical/industrial waste.
  • Impacts: Acute radiation syndrome, stochastic cancer risk, genetic mutations, long-term exclusion zones.

8. Plastic Pollution

  • Sources: Single-use plastics, packaging, fishing gear, tire wear, synthetic textiles (microfibers).
  • Impacts: Entanglement, ingestion, microplastics in food/water/air, endocrine disruption (BPA, phthalates), vector for pathogens.

Interconnectedness

Pollutants cross media: air → deposition → water/soil; plastics → microplastics → air/water/food. Solutions require systems thinking: circular economy, clean energy, regenerative agriculture, green chemistry, behavioral change.
