Petigrain Oil: Properties, Aroma & Uses in Perfumery
Petigrain oil is an essential oil obtained through steam distillation of the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium var. amara), which is mainly cultivated in Tunisia, Paraguay, Italy and France. It has a slightly bitter, herbaceous and sweet aroma with earthy and floral notes.

- Terpineol
- Camphor
- Citral
- Geraniol
- Nerolidol
- Farnesol
Petigrain oil is commonly used in perfumery for floral and citrus accords. It is also an ingredient in cosmetics and skincare products like face creams, body oils, and soaps due to its toning, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. In aromatherapy, petigrain oil is believed to promote relaxation and alleviate stress, often blended with other essential oils such as lavender, ylang-ylang, and chamomile.
