Colostomy Reversal: Preparing for Your Recovery
A colostomy is a procedure in which the colon is connected, through the abdominal wall, to an external bag for collecting waste. This may be put in place if the colon is being operated on or if the colon is unable to process waste on its own. Since it's often a temporary procedure, a colostomy reversal is necessary. This procedure reattaches the colon to the intestines and restores normal excretory functions. Properly preparing yourself for a colostomy reversal will aid in a safe and successful procedure.
Instructions
Stop smoking. Smoking weakens your immune system and increases the likelihood of complications during surgery.
Don't eat any solid foods the day before surgery. It's essential that the bowels be empty when the colostomy reversal is performed. You may drink, but only drink clear liquids. Acceptable food and drink includes water, jello, light fruit drinks and white tea. If you can see through the food or liquid when you hold it up to the light, you may ingest it.
Empty your bowels completely prior to surgery. This can be done with medication or laxatives. Your physician will help you choose the combination of bowel-cleansing methods that are right for you.
