Breast implants are not meant to last forever, as they can and do rupture or leak at some point in their lifetime. And when saline implants leak they do so quickly and noticeably, making it easy to detect.-
Causes of a Leak
-
Time is the most frequent cause of leaks; however, any impact or extreme pressure can cause a leak or rupture, including severe impacts or mammograms.
Misshapen Breast
-
The first sign of a leaking saline implant, and the most common side effec, is a misshapen or deflated breast.
Damage to Breast Tissue
-
Even though saline does not harm breast tissue, the empty implant shell can float and cause damage.
Implant Breaking Through the Skin
-
On rare occasions an implant shell can have a sharp edge caused by a rupture and can break through the skin.
Corrective Surgery
-
Surgery is required anytime a breast implant leaks. Doctors must remove the shell and replace the implant. It is important to consult with your plastic surgeon as soon as possible if a leak or rupture occurs.
