How to Research Plastic Surgeons

Plastic surgery is popular among aging adults, as certain procedures can dramatically reduce the signs of aging; however, younger patients are also beginning to undergo the knife to correct problematic body parts. When you are researching plastic surgery, it is vital to choose a plastic surgeon who has experience in the specific type of surgery you want. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization in the world for plastic surgeons, and in order for a doctor to become a member, she must have at least six years of surgical training---including at least three in plastic surgery---and continue to train in the newest techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Find plastic surgeons in your area by turning to online resources such as The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and by asking friends or family members who have undergone plastic surgery. Write down the names of plastic surgeons and leave space beside each name so you are able to write down procedure cost, the plastic surgeon's years of experience and any other information that will help you make your decision.

    • 2

Visit the website of any plastic surgeon you are considering. Make sure the plastic surgeon is a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Board of Plastic Surgery Inc. or The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These organizations ensure members have undergone the proper amount of training and perform all procedures according to ethical and surgical guidelines.

    • 3

Contact the plastic surgeons and schedule consultations. During each initial meeting, ask questions about the history of the surgeon's practice, his education and the cost of the procedure you want. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery provides a list of the most popular plastic surgery procedures and their national average cost. Review this list (linked in the references section) to ensure you are getting a fair deal. Ask the plastic surgeon for a list of former patient references. Most surgeons have a list of patients who have agreed to talk with potential clients.

    • 4

Contact the patients on the reference sheet and ask questions about their experiences with the doctor. While this is an excellent research tool, keep in mind the possibility of false representation and take patient recommendations with a grain of salt.

    • 5

Review the information you have gathered, select a surgeon and schedule an operation date.
