Ophthalmology Equipment: Tools Used by Eye Surgeons
Ophthalmologists are medical specialists who treat severe eye problems with complicated and delicate surgery. They use a variety of instruments and equipment such as forceps, eye speculums and scissors.-
Forceps
-
Surgical and tissue forceps are among the most common tools used by ophthalmologists. Forceps help to hold the eye in place during surgery to give the doctor greater access to the area to prevent damage to the soft tissues around the eyes.
Eye Speculums
-
Eye speculums are designed specifically to keep a patient's eyelids in place during a diagnostic test or surgical procedure. Speculums are used to give the ophthalmologist complete access to the ocular area without placing too much pressure on the globe of the eye.
Scissors
-
When the ophthalmologist needs to cut tissue, he uses a specialized pair of surgical scissors. While they resemble normal scissors, the tips are usually bent to allow the surgeon to make cuts at certain angles easier.
