Emphysema causes hyperinflation of the lungs and increases the distance between the chest wall and the heart, making it difficult to obtain clear images of the heart from the standard views. The apical window is located at the apex of the heart and is less affected by the hyperinflation of the lungs, allowing for better visualization of the heart.
