Managing Menopause After Hysterectomy: Natural Alternatives to HRT
Hormone replacement therapy is controversial, in no small part because it can increase risk of some cancers. Many women going through surgically induced menopause have opted to instead turn to botanicals, vitamins and nutrition to combat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, mood swings and vaginal dryness.-
History
-
Midwives have used herbal remedies such as black cohosh to treat menopausal symptoms since the Middle Ages.
Black Cohosh
-
Today black cohosh is sold at pharmacies and natural food stores under the name Remifemin. Clinical trials have shown that it improves vaginal lubrication, hot flashes, depression and headaches.
Other Herbs
-
Other botanical medications that women have found helpful are Vitex agnus castii, Siberian ginseng, dong quai, fo-ti and wild yam. Dandelion leaves and oat straw can increase vaginal lubrication.
Vitamins and Nutrition
-
Dr. Christiane Northrup recommends Vitamin E and citrus bioflavinoids with asorbic acids for hot flashes. Eating soy can increase estrogen levels and reduce menopausal symptoms.
Bone Loss
-
Reduced estrogen increases loss of bone density. Calcium, magnesium, boron and vitamins C and D are important to strong bones, as is exercise.
