Full Abdominal Hysterectomy Recovery

Full abdominal hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus and cervix through an abdominal incision. It can also include the removal of one or both ovaries and fallopian tubes. Recovery time is generally six to eight weeks.

Hospital Stay

• Abdominal hysterectomy is an in-patient procedure. Hospital stays usually last at least one or two days. You will be given medication for pain.

Recovery

• Plan for six to eight weeks of recovery time after you get home. You may want to arrange to have extra help at home. Get plenty of rest. Bleeding is normal for several days following a hysterectomy.

Warnings

• Abide by your doctor̵7;s activity restrictions. Do not lift anything heavy or have sexual intercourse for six weeks.

• Your menstrual cycle and fertility will cease. If you were pre-menopausal, having your ovaries removed will start menopause. There are many ways to combat symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

• Hysterectomy may provide relief of symptoms, which increases quality of life. However, pre-menopausal women may experience grief due to loss of fertility.
