Shingles does not retreat to the spinal cord.
The varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox remains dormant in nerve cells near the spine and brain after the initial infection. Years later, the virus can reactivate and travel along the nerves to the skin, causing an outbreak of shingles blisters.
