Colostomy Alternatives: Exploring Ileoanal Pouch & Continent Ileostomy
There are a few alternatives to a colostomy like patch, including:- Ileoanal pouch anastomosis (IPAA): This surgery creates a pouch out of the end of the small intestine and connects it to the anus. This allows for normal bowel movements without the need for a colostomy bag.
- Continent ileostomy: This surgery creates a stoma (opening) in the abdomen that is connected to the small intestine. A special pouch is attached to the stoma to collect waste. The pouch can be emptied several times a day through a small opening.
- Barnett Continent Intestinal Reservoir (BCIR): This is a type of continent ileostomy that uses a valve to control the flow of waste. The valve is opened and closed by the person using a small magnet.
