Infant Male Circumcision: Procedure, Preparation & Aftercare
1. Preparation:- The infant is cleaned, and the circumcision site is prepped with an antiseptic solution.
- A local anesthetic (such as a numbing cream or injection) is applied to reduce pain.
2. Clamping:
- A specialized circumcision clamp (such as a Gomco or Mogen clamp) is used to compress and hold the foreskin in place.
3. Incision:
- A small incision is made along the natural cleavage plane (the line where the foreskin separates from the glans).
4. Removal:
- The excess foreskin is carefully removed, leaving the glans penis exposed.
5. Hemostasis:
- Any small bleeding vessels are cauterized (burned) to stop bleeding.
6. Dressing:
- A petroleum jelly-coated gauze dressing is applied to protect the wound and encourage healing.
7. Post-Procedure Care:
- The circumcision site is monitored for any signs of infection or complications.
- The dressing is usually removed after 24-48 hours, and the area is kept clean and dry.
