Tourniquet Use: Safe Duration & Avoiding Tissue Damage
Tourniquets are a last-resort measure to control severe bleeding that isn't stopped by direct pressure. They should only be used while waiting for medical help, and should not be left on longer than 1 or 2 hours. If a tourniquet is left too long, it can damage the underlying tissues and nerves. This damage can lead to permanent disability or even amputation. That is why it is crucial to check the victim every few minutes to ensure the tourniquet is still necessary and not too tight.
