Can you go in a tanning bed while breastfeeding?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that breastfeeding women avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds emit ultraviolet radiation, which can be harmful to both people who are breastfeeding and the breastfeeding infant.
Radiation exposure
Ultraviolet radiation can damage the DNA in cells, leading to health problems such as cancer. Some research has linked exposure to ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds, with an increased risk of melanoma and other skin cancer.
Health risks to the breastfeeding infant
There is some concern that exposure to ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds can harm the breastfeeding infant:
- Tanning beds may reduce the level of folate, a B vitamin, in breast milk. Folate plays a vital role in the production of red blood cells, DNA synthesis and tissue growth.
- Studies suggest a possible link between exposure to ultraviolet radiation during pregnancy or lactation, with an increased risk of certain medical conditions in children, including immune system problems and possibly neurodevelopmental disorders.
Because of these concerns, it is generally advisable for women to avoid tanning beds, especially while breastfeeding.
