Mammography Technologist: Role, Responsibilities & Career Path
Mammography technologist (also called a mammographer) positions patients and operates specialized diagnostic imaging equipment to produce X-ray images (mammograms) of the breasts. These professionals work closely with radiologists and other medical professionals to detect breast cancer and other abnormalities in the breast tissue.
Responsibilities of a mammography tech may include:
- Preparing and positioning patients for mammograms
- Operating and maintaining mammography equipment
- Ensuring the proper dosage and quality of X-rays
- Processing and reviewing mammogram images
- Communicating results to radiologists and other medical professionals
- Educating patients about breast cancer screening and follow-up
- Maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality
- Complying with state and federal regulations for mammography
Qualifications for a mammography tech may include:
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited mammography technology program
- Licensure or certification in mammography
- Experience working in a healthcare setting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Certifications
Mammography techs are required to be certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the National Mammographic Quality Assurance Program (NMPQA). In order to maintain their certification, techs must complete continuing education requirements every two years.
