Copper IUD & Breastfeeding: Menstrual Cycle Changes Explained
It is possible for a breastfeeding woman using the copper IUD to experience changes in her menstrual cycle, including irregular or absent periods. The copper IUD can cause heavier menstrual bleeding initially due to its effect on the uterine lining. However, over time, some women may also experience lighter or infrequent periods, and menstrual bleeding may even stop or become very light in certain cases. This is considered a potential side effect of the copper IUD and not indicative of a problem unless accompanied by other concerning symptoms. For breastfeeding women, progestin-only pills, injectable progestin, the patch, the vaginal ring, IUDs which release progesterone (hormonal IUD or Progestasert), copper IUD may be used effectively during the postpartum period for contraceptive purposes.
