Implantation Bleeding: Causes, Risks & When to See a Doctor
Although implantation bleeding usually doesn't cause any problems, rarely, it can also be a sign of something more serious, such as;
- Ectopic pregnancy: Implantation bleeding can sometimes be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. An ectopic pregnancy is a medical emergency and can be life-threatening if the fallopian tube ruptures.
- Molar pregnancy: In rare cases, implantation bleeding can be a symptom of a molar pregnancy. Symptoms include rapid growth of uterine, nausea and vomiting, and dark brown vaginal discharge. It's important that a molar pregnancy is diagnosed and treated early, because it can lead to serious health problems.
- Miscarriage: Implantation bleeding can also sometimes be a sign of a miscarriage, which is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks of gestation. Miscarriages are common, and most women who experience one will go on to have a successful pregnancy in the future.
If you are experiencing implantation bleeding and you are concerned about any of these complications, it is important to see a doctor right away.
