How Is Radon Formed?
Radon is a radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the world. It is formed through the breakdown of uranium in the soil, rocks and groundwater.-
Uranium and Radon
-
The ultimate source of radon is uranium. Uranium is a radioactive element that is present in small amounts in soil and rocks.
Radioactive Decay and Radon
-
Radon is a product of the radioactive decay of uranium. Radioactive decay is the spontaneous breakdown of an atom's nucleus, and is accompanied by the release of energy and matter. When the nucleus of a uranium atom breaks down, radon gas is emitted.
The Movement of Radon
-
When radon is formed, the energy that is also produced by the radioactive decay of uranium causes it to be propelled either deeper into the mineral where it was formed, or closer to its surface. From there, radon gas can seep through the pores of the soil or rock and enter the atmosphere.
