Safe Storage of Welding Gases: Best Practices & Regulations
Welding gases, such as oxygen and acetylene, are flammable and explosive. Safe storage of these compressed gas cylinders is necessary to prevent injuries or death. Location, placement and proper marking of stored cylinders are required.-
Location
-
Oxygen and acetylene cylinders must either be stored at least 25 feet apart or be separated by a wall 5 feet high. Cylinder block walls are commonly used. Cylinders also need to be stored away from pathways for workers or equipment to avoid physical damage.
Placement
-
Welding gas cylinders must be stored in a vertical position. These gases are liquefied under pressure. During manufacture, a portion of the cylinder is empty to allow for heat expansion. The pressure relief valve on the top of the cylinder won't operate properly if the cylinder is not in a vertical position.
Markings
-
Each cylinder is required to be clearly marked to indicate its contents. The storage area must also be marked with warning signs indicating flammable or explosive hazard.
