Safe Stair Climbing with Crutches: A Step-by-Step Guide
Few things are more challenging or intimidating to an injured person than navigating up a long flight of stairs on crutches. If the crutches are positioned on the stairs incorrectly, you could possibly fall and suffer severe damage to your body. Consider seating yourself on the stairs and slowly pushing yourself up the stairs if you're not able to successfully navigate up the stairs on crutches.
Instructions
Position yourself and the crutches directly in front of the first step of the stairs. Push down into the crutches with your hands to secure your position.
Place your uninjured leg on the first step. Your injured leg and your crutches should remain on the step or floor below for the time being.
Steady yourself on the stairs and carefully bring the crutches and injured leg up onto the step where your good leg rests.
Repeat until you reach the top of the stairs. Take frequent breaks to steady yourself or if you feel dizzy or become tired.
