Correct Disposal Path for Used Clinical Gloves

Contaminated exam/procedure gloves are NOT red-bag (regulated medical) waste unless saturated with blood/OPIM per OSHA definition.

Standard Disposal Protocol

1. Doff properly: Peel inside-out to contain contamination.
2. Place in regular trash lined with plastic bag (non-red).
3. Hand hygiene: Wash with soap/water or ABHR immediately.
4. Full bag: Tie, place in facility's general waste stream per local regulations.

When Red Bag IS Required

• Gloves dripping liquid blood/body fluids
• Gloves contaminated with concentrated cultures, pathology specimens
• State/local rules more stringent than federal

Why It Matters

• Red-bag disposal costs 5–10× regular waste.
• Over-classification wastes resources; under-classification risks citations.
• Train staff on "saturation" vs. "contamination" distinction.
