Understanding One-Sided Abdominal Pain: Causes & When to Seek Help
One-sided abdominal pain can be caused by a number of health problems relating to the organs found in your abdomen. Certain problems manifest themselves on one specific side, while others may cause pain on either side of the abdomen.-
Appendicitis
-
Pain on the right side of the abdomen may be a sign of appendicitis. It is one of the most common causes for right-side abdominal pain and requires immediate emergency care to prevent the appendix from rupturing.
Gall Bladder
-
The gall bladder also causes pain on the right side of the abdomen. A trapped gall stone or an infection of the gall bladder are two common gall bladder illnesses.
Gas or Constipation
-
Trapped gas and constipation can cause pain on either side of the abdomen. A change in bowel movements can signal constipation.
Ulcers
-
A stomach ulcer can cause pain on either side of the abdomen. The burning of an ulcer can be mistaken for heartburn or indigestion.
Female Abdominal Pain
-
Abdominal pain in women is often related to the reproductive organs. Pain on one side of the abdomen can be caused by menstrual pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, an ectopic pregnancy or even a miscarriage.
