  Ensure the trigger is in the safety position if the canister is not completely empty. Hold the device facing away from you and other people.

  Unscrew or remove the cap from the bottom of the pepper spray device. This is where a key chain may be attached.

  Slide out the empty canister. It should come out easily, with little resistance.

  Remove the cap from the refill canister and insert it into the pepper spray device.
