Paramedic Uniform Colors: Standard Attire Explained

Paramedics typically wear dark navy blue, black, white, or dark red uniforms—not green. Color standards vary by agency, region, and country.

Common Color Schemes

• Navy blue or black pants + polo/shirt: Most common for municipal and private EMS in the U.S.
• White shirts: Often for supervisors, flight medics, or ceremonial dress.
• Red shirts: Used by some fire-based EMS systems (e.g., IAFF locals) or specific agencies.
• High-visibility ANSI vests: Worn over uniforms during roadway operations.

Why Not Green?

Green is traditionally associated with surgical scrubs or military medical personnel, not prehospital EMS. Some tactical/medical teams may use olive drab, but it’s not the standard for civilian paramedics.

Other Uniform Elements

• Steel-toe or composite-toe boots (black)
• Agency patches, name tape, certification badges (EMT-P, PHTLS, etc.)
• Weather gear (jacket, rain shell) in matching colors
