Tuberculosis Exposure: Workplace Guidelines and Test Result Wait Times

It is generally recommended that you wait for your tuberculosis (TB) test results before returning to work. Because TB is highly contagious, you could potentially spread the infection to coworkers if you are infected.

Test Timelines and Types

The TB skin test typically requires 48 to 72 hours to produce a result. If you have received the BCG vaccine against TB, the skin test may yield a false-positive result; in such cases, a blood test (interferon-gamma release assay) is preferred for accuracy.

Additional Evaluation

A chest X-ray is often recommended to rule out other lung conditions that may mimic TB symptoms.

Return-to-Work Guidance

If your test results are negative, you may return to work as soon as you feel well enough. If results are positive, you must follow your doctor's treatment plan and follow-up care instructions before resuming work activities.
