ABC in First Aid: Understanding Airway, Breathing, Circulation
ABC stands for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. These are the three most important things to check for when assessing a casualty in first aid.
Airway
* Check to see if the airway is clear and unobstructed.
* If the airway is blocked, try to clear it by gently sweeping the fingers into the mouth and removing any foreign objects.
* If the airway is still blocked, perform the Heimlich maneuver or CPR.
Breathing
* Check to see if the casualty is breathing.
* If the casualty is not breathing, start rescue breaths.
* If the casualty is breathing but having difficulty breathing, help them to a comfortable position and loosen any tight clothing.
Circulation
* Check to see if the casualty has a pulse.
* If the casualty does not have a pulse, start CPR.
* If the casualty has a pulse but is unconscious, place them in the recovery position.
Remember: Always check for ABC first before providing any other first aid treatment.
