First Aid: A Step-by-Step Guide to Victim Assessment
The four steps of victim assessment in first aid are:
1. Check the scene for safety
* Quickly assess the scene for any potential dangers that may pose a risk to you and the victim.
2. Check for responsiveness
* Gently shake the victim's shoulders and call their name or "Are you okay?" in a loud voice.
* If the person is unresponsive, shout for help.
3. Check the airway
* Open the person's airway by tilting their head back slightly and lifting the chin.
* Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing.
4. Check for circulation
* Check the person's pulse for at least 10 seconds.
* Check the pulse of the carotid artery which is located in the neck beside the Adam's apple.
