DIY Water Filter: Build a Simple & Affordable System
Water filtration is a primary concern for he health conscientious family. Many people use bottled water as an alternative to municipal tap water. Unfortunately, most consumers are unaware of the trace toxins that are carried in the water from the chemicals used to make plastic bottles. Commercial water filters are typically bulky and expensive. But you can create a smaller, more economical filter with a few simple materials.Things You'll Need
- Water tank with outlet
- Coconut fiber
- Activated catalytic carbon
- Clean sand
Instructions
Lay the coconut fiber along the bottom of the tank. This will ensure that your filter is free from the growth of harmful fungi and bacteria.
Place the activated catalytic carbon on top of the fiber. Activated catalytic carbon is a major component of most commercial filters available for purchase.
Add another layer of coconut fiber to secure the carbon in place and to provide additional filtration of larger contaminants.
Slowly pour a layer of sand over the surface of the coconut fiber as evenly as possible.
Repeat the steps listed above to maximize your filtration, depending on your preference and the size of your tank. Adding more layers will provide more thorough water filtration.
