How to Operate a Portable Fire Extinguisher
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires many businesses to install portable fire extinguishers. Many homeowners purchase fire extinguishers for increased property protection and a reduction in insurance premiums. With portable fire extinguishers so prevalent, it makes sense to know how to use one. The time to familiarize yourself with operating a portable fire extinguisher is before a fire occurs.
Instructions
Hold the fire extinguisher upright.
Pull the ring pin out to unlock the operating lever.
Stand about 20 feet back from the flames.
Aim the extinguisher low, pointing the nozzle or hose toward the fire's base.
Squeeze the operating lever to discharge the extinguishing chemicals. If you stop squeezing the lever, the extinguisher stops emitting the chemical spray, so keep it squeezed.
Sweep the extinguisher in a side-to-side motion toward the fire, moving carefully toward it.
