Understanding Heat Stress Illnesses: Heatstroke & Heat Exhaustion
1. Heatstroke: Heatstroke is the most serious heat-related illness and is characterized by a body temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) or higher and altered mental status. Symptoms include confusion, disorientation, seizures, and coma. Heatstroke can be fatal if not treated immediately.
2. Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion is a less serious heat-related illness that is characterized by dehydration and electrolyte loss. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke if not properly treated.
3. Heat cramps: Heat cramps are mild, brief muscle spasms that can occur during or after exercise or physical activity in hot weather. Heat cramps are usually harmless and can be treated by drinking fluids and resting in a cool place.
