Coping with Unfairness: Strategies for Resilience and Healing
Unpleasant events that seem unfair or random can be some of the most disturbing occurrences in life. After these events happen, you may feel that society is totally corrupt or that luck plays too big a role in existence. Examples include a co-worker that was promoted instead of you even though he was less qualified, or a traffic accident that resulted in a serious injury that has long-term consequences.
Instructions
See a therapist. A therapist can put unfair events in perspective and work with you to manage the regret that often accompanies these events.
Talk to a friend or family member. If you prefer not to seek professional help, a trusted friend or family member may offer useful advice or make comments that improve your mood.
Focus on the positive things in your life. Too much focus on negative events and thoughts may lead to depression or anxiety.
Immerse yourself in activities such as favorite hobbies or physical exercise. If you dwell too much on regret, these activities may give you a needed distraction.
