What is needed to become a psychiatrist?
Education
* Bachelor's degree (any field)
* Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.)
* Residency in psychiatry (4 years)
Licensing and certification
* Pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA)
* Complete a residency in psychiatry accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
* Obtain a license to practice medicine in your state
* Obtain board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
