Lexapro (generic name escitalopram) was approved by the FDA approved escitalopram in August 2002 for the treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorders. This antidepressant is manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals Inc. and is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).

• Psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety are thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain's neurotransmitters.

Function

• SSRIs like Lexapro inhibit the re-uptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin via the nerves, so adequate levels of serotonin are able to attach onto the receptors.
