Understanding Ethical Misconduct Complaints for Social Workers in NYC
Social workers are required by their licensing boards to adhere to a specific code of ethics. For instance, they must respect the confidentiality of their clients. However, social workers are mandated reporters, meaning they must report any cases of child abuse or neglect to the proper authorities. Social workers should not have dual relationships with clients, meaning they should not provide social services to a relative, friend or employee. They must also not have any type of romantic or sexual relationship with clients. If a social worker has behaved in an unethical way toward you, you can file a complaint and the licensing board will investigate.
