Midwives in the 1980s: Terminology and Evolution

In the 1980s, midwives were still commonly referred to as "midwives" or "nurse-midwives". The modern term "certified nurse-midwife" (CNM) was created in the late 1980s, but it may not have been in widespread use until the following decades.
