According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for diagnostic medical sonographers in 2018 was $71,230. The lowest 10% of sonographers earned less than $50,510, while the highest 10% earned more than $113,710.

Sonographers with additional training and certification may earn higher salaries. For example, sonographers who are registered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) may earn up to 20% more than those who are not registered.

Sonographers who work in hospitals typically earn higher salaries than those who work in private clinics or outpatient centers. Sonographers who work in rural areas may also earn lower salaries than those who work in urban areas.
