Nursing Degree Required for Doula Work? What You Need to Know
While a formal education in midwifery or nursing might improve your knowledge and make you a better doula, the majority of doulas do not have a nursing or midwifery degree. In most US states, doula work does not require a state license. There are few jurisdictions in the US and elsewhere in the world that regulate the profession.
Many doulas hold non-health related university degrees. While it is certainly possible to be an effective doula with or without a nursing degree, you will likely have more difficulty competing with those who do have such a degree if you don’t have one as well.
Doula certification is not mandatory, but it is a way to demonstrate your competence and make yourself more appealing to potential clients. Childbirth educators and doulas recommend the DONA doula certification program.
