Addressing Married Couples Both With Medical Degrees: Etiquette & Best Practices
When addressing a married couple who are both doctors, the correct way to address them is "Dr. and Dr." followed by their last name. For example, if the couple's last name is Smith, you would address them as "Dr. and Dr. Smith."
Alternatively, you can also address them as "Dr. [Husband's name] and Dr. [Wife's name]." For example, if the husband's name is John and the wife's name is Mary, you would address them as "Dr. John Smith and Dr. Mary Smith."
It is generally considered inappropriate to abbreviate one spouse's title while using the full title for the other spouse. For example, it would be incorrect to address the couple as "Dr. Smith and Mrs. Smith" or "Dr. John Smith and Mrs. Mary Smith."
When in doubt, it is always best to err on the side of caution and use the full titles for both spouses.
