How to Register Online for Medicare Part A Only

Medicare Part A is one of the health benefits available for people over the age of 65 and those with disabilities. Medicare Part A covers inpatient care in hospitals, hospice and home health care. If you paid Medicare taxes while working, you may qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A benefits. If you do not want to apply for other Medicare benefits, you can apply for Medicare Part A benefits only online.

      Check if you meet the requirements to apply for Medicare Part A. In order to apply online, you must be 64 years and 8 months of age, live in the United States and do not wish to receive Social Security benefits at this time. You also can apply online if you are not currently receiving any other type of Medicare benefits.

      Gather personal information needed to complete the online application. You need your physical and mailing address, Social Security number and current health insurance information.

      Access the application for Medicare only. The application for Medicare Part A is available on the Social Security Administration's website.

      Fill in your personal information. Check the information you entered for accuracy. Incorrect information may delay the processing of your application.

      Choose whether you want Medicare Part A benefits only. You are given the option to enroll in Medicare Part B as well. If you would also like to enroll in Part B, select the option to do so.

      Answer questions about your current health benefits. If you are currently enrolled in a group health plan, you need to provide information about your benefits. If not, answer no to the questions.

      Review the summary of your answers. Check the application for any errors. Use the Previous button to correct any errors.

      Electronically sign and submit the application. If the application is free of errors, submit the application by selecting the Sign Now option.
