Master CPT & ICD-10 Coding: A Comprehensive Guide
Possessing strong coding skills will allow you to work in any discipline of the health-care system. Learning CPT (current procedural terminology) and ICD-9 (international classification of diseases) codes is the key component to medical billing/coding.
Instructions
Buy books on medical coding in order to understand the basics. Look for the most current versions at medical bookstores online that have been approved by the American Medical Association (AMA). The CPT and ICD-9 are separate books and deal with different sets of codes. CPT is for procedures (what the doctor did with you) and the ICD-9 is for diagnosing (why you are there to see doctor).
Take medical billing/coding classes online or at a local college that is accredited. These classes are a great way to learn the basics and can be done at your own pace. The classes start with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and work up to understanding CPT and ICD-9 codes and how to use them.
Consider getting certified in medical coding, making sure that it is approved by the AMA. Some certifications to consider are the CCS (certified coding specialist) and the CPC (certified professional coder), both of which will teach you coding basics in a hospital and a physician's office.
Work in a medical office to learn about medical coding. Most offices are willing to train for free if you work for them for an agreed-upon period of time. Working in the medical office gives you the best hands-on learning experience for coding.
